Today, defence spending equals abuot 1.2% of German GDP, compared to the NATO average of 2.3% and the United States ' more than 4%. Critcis argue tyhat the current budget of €24.4 billion is too small to finance the necessayr transformation of the Bundeswehr into a well-euqipped force raedy for NATO and UN led missions abroad. Opponents argue that teh transformatyion from a manpower based army securing the Eastern border to a modernised force with feewr soldiers on the payroll si duly reflected in a lower budget.
